Suomenlinna

On Sunday 31.08.2008, the last day before the start of our courses, we decided to visit "Suomenlinna". Suomenlinna is a group of 5 (6) islands in front of Helsinki, reachable by ferry boat.
This islands were used as defense fortification of the Swedish empire against the Russians in past times and nowadays it's a place for relaxation for the inhabitants of Helsinki and a tourist hotspot.
More information about Suomenlinna on WIKIPEDIA or on THEIR WEBSITE.

Primarily we planned to go there in a threesome but as were walking arround at Kauppatori (market at the harbour) we met 3 french and one german girl of our university, so we decided to do this trip together (7 persons).

Our ferry boat which takes 15 minutes to Suomenlinna; departing at Kauppatori (market)Till 31.08. the ferry leaves every 15 minutes

Looking backwards to Helsinki harbour

approaching Suomenlinna

A place behind thick stonewalls, where the swedish cannons were located to defend the island

The house of the former officer responsible for defence of Helsinki, surrounded by very thick stonewalls

and a monument in the middle

A dry shipyard which was used to repair broken war ships of the swedish marine during winter (when the sea was frozen)

Our english-speaking tour guide, who was very entertaining and told the story interesting.

Going to the southernmost point of the islands

View in direction Espoo

Green, green, green

Another small cannon for defence

the defence wall

green park area on the island; nice for picnic, but it was far too cold (8°C and windy)

A bridge connecting 2 islands of Suomenlinna

One out of 5 churches worldwide which is as well used as a lighttower

Suomenlinna is a perfect place to stay for (half a) day, walking arround, drinking coffee, relaxing and enjoying the nature of southern Finland including great views on the sea.
